Approaching a Problem

By Esther Cohen

Dealing with an overwhelming problem can take over our mind and soul, hijacking our thoughts and feelings, and consuming endless hours of our days.

Depending on the nature of the issue, resolving difficulties does not solely rest in our hands. It might be contingent on people’s attitudes or circumstances changing. At times there are no clear solutions for the difficulties we face. A problem is generally triggered by a set of events and/or people. Everyone faces challenges from a different emotional and circumstantial standpoint. How we understand and perceive the issue will very much depend on our emotional state, mindset and how it affects us practically.

Try and see things from someone else’s perspective. Look to understand where your feelings are coming from. Some difficulties are resolvable, some are not. If there is nothing you can do to solve the problem or if you have tried to resolve it to no avail, let go of it.

There are three main ways to approach and deal with a problem:

·      If you can’t do anything about it and you can live with it – Accept it

·      If you can’t accept it but you can modify the circumstances - Change it

·      If you can’t change it and there is nothing you can do, put it behind you – Leave it
